In June 2016 I came to Takigahara quarry and met Araya san whose family have been working the quarry for 5 generations. When I asked if he would consider me working in the quarry he said very simply that I could use some of the stone blocks he carves each day “ any amount of them”. I held this possibility close to me whilst I began to raise funds for the project not knowing what I would make |

Parallel Space is responding specifically to the Winter chamber of the quarry. A deep tunnel carved into the stone of the mountain over many years, the space of the quarry is sculptural in itself, accentuated by all the cut blocks of stone waiting in their turn to be used. |

| I wanted to create a work that responded to the blocks of stone and that created a space that echoes the large space of the quarry, that the visitor can become a part of. It was necessary that it did not get in the way of the daily work of the quarry and that it integrated with the space as a whole. |

I was inspired by Jun’ichirō Tanizaki’s ‘In Praise of Shadows’. I am creating a dark space within a dark space. Shadow suspended within shadow. As the visitor passes through Parallel Space the narrowness of the passage creates a physical sensation of being slightly squeezed by the stone, the cut quarry wall on one side, the hand carved stones on the other. This sensation of walking through enables the viewer to experience a more bodily response to the vast lofty space of the quarry itself. |
谷崎潤一郎筆「陰翳礼讃」にヒントを得ました。 今回の作品は暗い空間に暗い空間を創っています。 影に映る影。来客が並行空間を通るときに、通路の 狭さにより体が押しつぶされる感覚を少し覚えま す。一方には掘られた壁、また一方には手彫りの石 があり体が少し絞られるように感じます。通る際の 体感が石切り場の広大な空間を身近に感じることを 可能にします。 | |
