Film enables using the sounds of the quarry to convey the sense of being underground. In Parallel Space the human width passageway created by the wall echoes the larger space of the quarry itself. We wanted to explore the physicality of the space and its feeling of being underground through the use of dance responding to the spaces themselves and the resistance the work creates for a performer. We wanted to use the natural sounds of the quarry and dancer to integrate her movement with the light and dark, its weight and mass and that of the stone itself. How resistance can bring its own source of energy. The collaborative process has been explored over 2 years. We understood through experimentation that each space, the top wall, the side wall and the passage way defined certain responses. The relationship of those responses is crucial in sustaining the viewer’s connection with the sculptural work and quarry space in balance with the movement and sound.
