Air Iomlaid (on exchange) was an ambitious visual arts project conceived by Julie Brook with Johnny Gailey, the Young People’s Programme Manager, in collaboration with the Fruitmarket gallery in Edinburgh and Lasair Ealain. The project was taught through Gaelic involving primary school pupils from Bùnsgoil Shlèite, Skye and Tollcross Primary School, Edinburgh. The children learned to look, draw and paint in the urban and rural landscapes of Edinburgh and Skye, developing their relationship with and response to their own environment and that of their partners on the exchanges. The resulting sketchbooks, drawings, paintings and large scale charcoal compositions were exhibited at the Fruitmarket gallery, Edinburgh; Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, Skye; Scottish Natural Heritage, Inverness. The project was funded by the Scottish Arts Council’s Inspire Fund, Bòrd na Gàidhlig, Scottish Natural Heritage and Young Films.
